Mark reviewed this product on 10/18/05 A month and several rounds later I'm finally feeling comfortable with the hybrids. The only annoyance is that I have to remember to lower my hands slightly at address and take a less aggressive backswing. The irons are a dream. My short game, which was always pretty solid, has improved dramatically. The lower weight has helped me really get under the ball. Feeling like I should buy the 2-4 just to round out the set.
Doug reviewed this product on 10/08/05 Review update: After extensive use and a month since my initial gushy review, I can still endorse the quality of this hybrid set. The irons are so nice, I've considered ordering 2 through 4 irons to make a complete set! As I tinkered with my swing, I had a harder time with the longer clubs. However with an intense but methodical revision of my swing using the hybrids as an indicator of my progress, I now see good results. Bottom line, if you have a fundamenatally solid swing, you'll love these clubs. If not, despite the hype in the golf industry, you can't buy your game, sorry, and the longer irons--hybrids or not--will likely reflect swing flaws. (For the ultimate authority on the swing, carefully read the book: Swing Like a Pro by Mann and Griffin, and get a lesson or two from a good teacher. It did the trick for me!) Bottom line, I still see these clubs as the ulitmate set for me, and I see myself enjoying them for a long time.
Mark reviewed this product on 09/22/05 Set arrived in great shape about 2 weeks ago. I took them out the same night to the range. I had been using Callaway X-18 demos and noticed the Excel irons to be a bit more bottom heavy. It took a few swings to find the sweet spot, but I really like the solid feel when I connect. I found myself reaching for the 5 iron for most long iron shots on a short 9 hole course I recently played as I'm still not comfortable with the hybrids. I'm trying to get consistent connection with the hybrids after almost 2 weeks. The 4h provides a surprising amount of loft, and I've had to adjust my swing just to get better distance than my 5 iron. I came close to tossing the 3h on several occasions. It's the most unforgiving club I've ever used. I'm going to take a more methodical (back to basics) approach with the 3h this next week and hope that cures whatever I'm doing wrong.
Steve reviewed this product on 09/08/05 I received my set on the 7th and hit them the same night. All clubs including the hybrids felt great. I hit the hybrids off different levels of grass and all hit well. Along with Excel driver and woods I feel ready to take it to the links. Great product regardless of the great cost.
Paul reviewed this product on 09/06/05 I had heard of hybrids and wanted to try something different. I do like these clubs. I got them with regular shafts (stiff) and Tour Velvet grips. I have a medium swing speed (~100MPH) and I can reliably hit the 4h ~210 yds through the air off a tee, and ~170 from the thin stuff with a 3/4 backswing. The hybrids "talk" to you, in the sense when you hit it right, they sound almost like a pure wood, which is a nice touch. They are tough, my girlfriend has dug a trench with these things more than once, and they don't buckle or warp at the hosel. Irons are solid, basic iron set, nothing spectacular, nothing to complain about, they will be as good as your swing. I wash my clubs regularly, and be forewarned to be careful with the backs of these irons or else the Excel sticker will want to come off (assuming you want to keep it!)
